I’ll be honest - I don’t know a camshaft from a driveshaft. I’ve never changed my own oil. I have no desire to spend a Saturday afternoon swapping out sparkplugs. I don’t even wax my Honda Accord. But for some strange reason, I could look at cool cars and antique automobiles all day long.

That’s why I’m excited about the return of this weekend’s O’Reilly Auto Parts 500 World of Wheels. This show has been around more than 50 years and always has an incredible collection of awesome hot rods, classic cars, custom motorcycles and more!

There’s just something about seeing (and sometimes touching) these vehicles all painted and polished and ready to roll. Must be a guy thing. But it’s a family thing, too, with slot car racing and other fun things to check out and enjoy.

This year, the show will also have a strong line-up of celebrities to meet and greet … especially for the guys. Appearing this year are:

TV’s Sp onge bo b Squarepants Friday, 6-9 p.m.
Sat., 11 a.m. – 8 p.m.
Sun. 11 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Deena “The Blast” Nicole from “Jersey Shore” Sat., 1-5 p.m.

WWE Superstar Rey Mysterio Sat., 1-3 p.m.

Reality TV celebrity Billy the Exterminator Sun. noon-5 p.m.

So you don’t have to be a car buff or a grease monkey to enjoy this show, but if you are, clear your weekend schedule. You’ll need plenty of time to make your way through all three buildings of displays, stages and exhibits. Vrrrroooooommm!

Super Fun at State Fairgrounds

The Big Game may be taking place 15 minutes away from here, but the State Fairgrounds has been full of Super Bowl excitement this week.

It started early in the week with the transformation of the Pepsi Coliseum as the NFL prepared it for Thursday Night’s Pepsi Fan Jam headlined by B.o.B., Gym Class Heroes and the All American Rejects. Tonight’s show featuring Steven Tyler and Carrie Underwood is also sure to be a great time.

The commissioner’s party, the Maxim party and other events have also brought big name celebs to the fairgrounds, but nothing can top this morning’s presentation of the Bart Starr Award at the Super Bowl Breakfast in the Exposition Hall. More than 2,000 people turned out to see Washington Redskins linebacker London Fletcher receive the honor for his outstanding talents on the field and his faith-led civic involvement in real life.

Indianapolis will be remembered for a long time as a great Super Bowl host city, and the State Fairgrounds is proud to be playing a small role in that.

Discovery Hall Open for Business

Remember the old Girls’ Dormitory at the Fairgrounds? If you do, then – no offense – you’ve been around a while. The third building in the Fairgrounds’ 4-H Education Complex is four decades removed from its heyday and has been closed since 1990. Not anymore.

The new “Discovery Hall” is open for business and conducting business every day thanks to its three new office tenants: the Indiana Board of Animal Health, Marion County Purdue Extension Service and Marion County Soil and Water Conservation District. Today’s Open House officially started a new chapter in the building’s history, five years and $5 million dollars since the first phase of a four-phase renovation began.

The three groups’ offices occupy the first two floors of the building while the third floor is used to house 4-H kids and activities during the State Fair and other groups year-round. The renovation completes a long-term goal of reopening the entire complex, which also includes Centennial Hall (formerly the Boys’ Dormitory) and the Exhibit Hall, both renovated and reopened in 2004.

The three organizations all love their new surroundings, and we love the fact that the building is not just providing essential meeting and office space, but also producing earned revenue (about $200,000/year) that we can use toward other operational needs. This is your classic “win-win” scenario. And who doesn’t love a winner?

Coliseum Renovation Takes Big Step Forward!

Have you heard the news? The Pepsi Coliseum is getting a facelift!

That’s right, after 70 years of hockey, horses and hog shows – not to mention presidents, Pacers, boxing and Beatlemania – the Pepsi Coliseum is going to be brought up to modern standards. The details aren’t all set yet, but the plan is to close the grand old building this fall and cut the ribbon on the updated version in time for the 2014 State Fair now that the State Fair Commission has approved a resolution to move forward with design work.

How much will it cost? What will it look like? What about all the events that take place in there now?

Those are all good questions, and we don’t have all the answers. Not yet, anyway.

A financing package is still being put into place and we should get all those numbers squared away soon. Last fall, a Program & Scheduling committee was formed to examine the best way to reschedule all the State Fair events that normally take place in the Coliseum, so all the horse pulls, hitch competitions and other things will happen, but we can’t tell you where just yet.

As for the Coliseum’s new look, there won’t be one on the outside. The building’s “shell” will remain the same, just a little shinier … like when it was first erected in 1939. Inside, though, should be a spectacular improvement. Check these out…

What a glorious sight! Don’t get me wrong, though. The new building won’t have skyboxes with parquet floors and gold-lined drink holders. It will simply be a modern, comfortable, all-purpose arena with seating for 7,000-9,000 people depending on the type of event. That’s something that Indy doesn’t have right now, so we expect the new building to be even busier than the current one. It will also be the new site for all the fair’s headline entertainment – a much better use of resources than paying for a permanent roof over the stage in the grandstand.

Design plans are going forward and a construction manager will soon be selected. Stay tuned on the progress. This longtime dream is starting to become a reality, and it feels great!

Indiana On the Fly - this weekend!

I'm no fisherman, but the thought of standing in a cool stream in the middle of the mountains on a warm spring day sure sounds appealing! So maybe I should take my own advice and head out to this Saturday's “Indiana On the Fly” fly fishing show in the State Fairgrounds' Ag/Hort building.

There will be all kinds of great gear, experts and clinics to check out, including well known outdoorswoman, cook and author Georgia Pelligrini. Here's a little preview, in her own words:

My passion for good food, for simple food, began at an early age, on a boulder by the side of a creek as I caught my trout for breakfast. I grew up on the same land my great-grandfather owned and worked. This place is called Tulipwood, and there my great-aunt could name every species of plant; my grandmother made meatloaf, balsamic vinaigrette and egg dip with an intoxicating savoir-faire; and my father raised honeybees and quince trees with the care typically devoted to a newborn.

This connection to the land and the deep satisfaction one gets from manual labor stayed with me through college and even during the years that I strayed onto the path of least resistance and into the world of finance.

After a bit of soul searching I decided to leave the cubicle world behind and enrolled in culinary school (French Culinary Institute). I soon began to work in farm to table restaurants in the U.S. (Gramercy Tavern and Blue Hill at Stone Barns) and France (La Chassagnette), driving heavy farm equipment, and harvesting both meat and plants for dinner. I found that I was most interested in the foragers and fig collectors and salami makers that arrived to the restaurants with their goods, and soon befriended them and went on journeys with them, through the woods, into curing rooms, and over the rolling hills of olive oil vineyards. My first book “Food Heroes,” tells the story of sixteen culinary artisans across the world, who are fighting to preserve their food traditions.

It was during all this that I decided it was time to really get at the heart of where our food comes from and head to the source—Mother Nature. I bought a shotgun and set my sites on the cutting edge of culinary creativity intent on pushing the boundaries of American gastronomy.

The result of these adventures will be a book called “Girl Hunter” arriving in Fall 2011. I currently roam the world hunting and gathering, tasting good food, and meeting the good people who make it. In any given city, on any given day, you can find me posted up in a café with my shotgun and a glass of rosé.

Tippecanoe County Reigns Supreme

It wouldn’t be the end of the fair without crowning a new Indiana State Fair queen. Today, 88 great girls throughout the state highlighted what Indiana is all about. However, it was Erika Burghardt of Tippecanoe County who was crowned as Miss Indiana State Fair 2012. You couldn’t ask for a better reaction from Erika. "Surprised," "shocked" and "tears of joy" are all accurate descriptions of her emotions the moments after her name was called.

Throughout the summer I watched Sara Alford represent the 2011 Indiana State Fair and take part in many of the events during the fair. She did a great job, and I have no doubt that Erika will take over the title and do the same thing.

Congratulations, Erika! I can’t wait to return to the fair next year and see you reign over the “Year of Dairy Cows”!

The Blue Monkey Sideshow

These people are freaks. And no, I am not being insulting or judgmental – the members of the Blue Monkey Sideshow pride themselves on being highly entertaining but slightly insane.

The show features five men, all working together in various acts to put together a show that is amusing and mind-boggling, with a comical twist.

And who are these sideshow members? There is main narrator Krembo, musician Skanky, “Mystic of the East” Swami, sword-swallowing Freakshow Foley and masked Zja ‘Dega.

There were many acts in this half-hour show but the one that I found most disturbing was when Freakshow Foley swallowed a foot-long sword without a moment of hesitation. To my delight (and horror), that first sword wasn’t the only one Foley swallowed – he also gulped down a curved sword that caused his Adam’s apple to move as the sword passed through his throat.

The show also featured a bed of nails, extreme juggling and the Swami mediating in an airless bag for three minutes.

You know I can’t give anything else away – so you have to see the Blue Monkey Sideshow for yourself in any of its remaining performances. For the last two days of the State Fair, you can check out this quirky show at 3:30, 5:30, 7:30 and 9 p.m. in the Dow AgroSciences Celebration Park.

Dr. Oz and the Donut Burger

I would have never thought of myself as someone to get star-struck but boy, was I wrong – because that’s exactly what happened when I met Dr. Oz on Thursday.

Dr. Oz knew that he was coming to the State Fair Aug. 11 to speak about Hoosier health. What he did not realize was that once he took the stage, he would be handed a donut burger. True Indiana State Fair style.

In case you are unfamiliar – a donut burger consists of a burger with all the fixes (onions, tomato, pickles, etc) squeezed in between two Krispy Kreme donuts.

It was unnerving to hand televisions new face of health a donut burger (in front of thousands of people), but someone had to do it. When presented with the burger, Dr. Oz grabbed the delicious concoction without hesitation and took a huge bite. The crowd went wild. And I got escorted off the stage.

My three minutes of fame might have been over but Dr. Oz remained on stage to dazzle the audience.

A LEGO Up on Everyone Else

My two boys love LEGOS®. They could sit and build things for hours. Well, at least they could. They’re 10 and 13 now and LEGOS aren’t quite as cool as they used to be, but don’t try telling that to Brian Darrow.

Who’s Brian Darrow? Just call him “Mr. LEGO.”

Actually, Brian is just a regular guy… chiropractor by day, Lego madman by night (and weekends). Like every young boy, Brian started out building basic scenes with standard LEGO® kits. That was in the 1960s. When Brian’s sons started tinkering with the plastic bricks in the ‘80s and ‘90s, his interest was renewed and the hobby turned into a passion.

In 2003, Brian joined IndyLUG (Indy LEGO Users Group) and his creations started getting larger and larger. His works were part of the club’s public shows, but now have become so elaborate and well known that he usually has his own exhibitions, including one this year at the Indiana State Fair.

Brian has spent countless hours putting together his dynamic creations, but real Hoosiers are most amazed by his miniature Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The scene is not only ripe with detail inside the track, but the business and traffic jams outside the track are just as realistic.

It’s hard to tell in this video, but the front straight-away of this speedway has 33 signatures on it. The autographs are from all 33 drivers of the 2011 Indianapolis 500, in order of course. He even has A J Foyt's signature in the pace car position!

Brian is very happy to be sharing his passion with the public. His works will be in the Ellison Bakery Home & Family Arts Building throughout the remainder of the State Fair and he will be on hand to take visitors’ questions on the final two weekends of the fair.

So the next time you think your kid has become too old to play with his Legos, think about Brian… successful, happy and humble. Who wouldn’t want their kid to turn out like that?

Pioneer Village Celebrates 50 Years

Fairgoers of all ages enjoy the old-time fun Pioneer Village offers. Now in its 50^th year of existence, enthusiasts from all over Indiana are expressing their love for this beloved exhibit of the fair. One of those people is long-time fair fan, Eugene Brodie. Eugene’s parents took him to his first fair as a small child and he has attended the fair every year since. In fact, 72-year-old Eugene has not missed the Indiana State Fair in more than 65 consecutive years. Now that’s impressive!

His favorite memory? Eugene remembers getting an ice cream with butterscotch and nuts every year as a kid, something he says has now been replaced with elephant ears.

“They’re probably my favorite-I get one every year,” said Eugene while laughing.

Growing up, Eugene says his favorite activity was going to the Agricultural Building and looking at the antique tractors. Even though he started going to the State Fair before Pioneer Village was built, he has visited the exhibit every year since it opened in 1961. Seeing the antique tractors in Pioneer Village as well as enjoying the music and farm equipment remain some of his favorite things to do at the State Fair today. Eugene was surprised to hear that Pioneer Village is celebrating its 50^th anniversary this year.

“That was 50 years ago?” he asked. We know, Eugene, we know.

Pioneer Village has expanded and developed like crazy in the last 50 years. Yet, it remains the perfect place where the modern world disappears and pioneer life takes over. It’s life the way your grandparents, or great-grandparents, lived. And most importantly, its fun. Where else can you go to experience life before modern conveniences (and get to leave when you’re ready to get back to your real, comfortable life)?

And the best part of having a 50^th anniversary? Celebrating. The big celebration event takes place Sunday, Aug. 14 at 1 p.m. when more than 150 antique tractors will dominate a special 50th Anniversary Parade in the Hoosier Lottery Grandstand. The parade will feature bands, animals, vintage vehicles and other unique oddities.

Although Eugene won’t get a chance to see the parade this year, he is already planning his annual trip to the State Fair. I got to hear briefly about his experience with Pioneer Village and the State Fair, but I am hoping to see him in action when he comes to the fair on Aug. 18. 50 years of Pioneer Village and long-time fair fans- what could be better?

It's a bird, it's a plane....it's a zeppelin

Have you ever imagined floating high in the air, getting a bird’s eye view and seeing as far as the eye can see? What if I told you the Indiana State Fair is giving away a chance for one lucky winner to take a flight of a lifetime? On Aug. 10, we will do just that.

The Farmers Airship, the world’s largest airship and one of only two Zeppelins in the world, is coming to Indy Aug. 8 and will fly over the State Fair a few different times during its week-long stay in town. It’s all part of the Farmers Airship Covering Communities Tour, which is a six-month journey taking the world’s largest airship across the U.S. and back.

The airship will be offering public “flightseeing” tours departing from the Indianapolis Regional Airport (formerly called Mt. Comfort) in Greenfield for $375/person. However, one lucky Twitter follower of the Indiana State Fair will win a free flight for himself and a friend. To enter, you must be following the fair on Twitter at @Indystatefair and then re-Tweet the following message:

“Want to float over @Indystatefair on the world’s largest airship? RT for a chance to win.”

At noon on Wednesday, Aug. 10, we will draw one winner who will get two seats for a flight on Friday, Aug. 12. These restrictions apply:

You must be at least 18 years old and weigh less than 300 pounds
You must be able to walk and climb stairs unassisted
You must supply your name, email address and weight as well as the weight of the person who will accompany you on your flight

These two seats will be good ONLY on Friday, Aug. 12. You must arrive at the airport in Greenfield promptly at 4 p.m. and your flight will last from 5 – 5:45 p.m. Flight is subject to changes in weather. Any cancellations or reschedules must be worked out with the Airship company.

This is the only commercial passenger airship in the United States, so very few people will ever get to have this experience. MHS presents The Stars of the Peking Acrobats

If there is something that you cannot afford to miss at the fair this year- it’s the Stars of the Peking Acrobats.

These acrobats travel around the world, showcasing ancient Chinese acrobatics in a variety of acts that aren’t for the faint of heart. They balance drums, do headstands on top of six balancing chairs and even have eight people stand on a bicycle at one time.

I would love to tell you about each act, but these feats of strength and balance are nearly impossible to explain- you have to see the acts performed to truly appreciate the talent these acrobats have. To get a better idea of how great these performances are, check out the below video!

But wait, you haven’t heard the best part - not only is this an amazing show, it is FREE entertainment!

That’s right, people. With paid admission to the fair, you get to experience mind-blowing acts that will have you on the edge of your seat. If you want to see this great show, I would suggest getting there early because the seats fill up fast!

You can check out The Stars of Peking Acrobats perform every day of the fair in the Dow AgroSciences Celebration Park at Noon, 2:30 and 5 p.m. There are special shows available at 7 p.m. on some nights, so be sure to check in your free Indiana State Fair program!

The 2011 Indiana State Fair Has Offically Begun!

I pride myself as a born and raised Hoosier, so this fair isn’t my first. It is, however, my first as an intern. The fair is in full swing and let me tell you, there is SO much to see, do and yes, eat!

Despite an afternoon pop-up shower, the fair kicked-off with great weather. Fairgoers were greeted with slightly cooler temps that made it even better. So all in all, opening day went off with out a hitch!

Wondering what is new to the 2011 Indiana State Fair? Here are just a few of what’s new:

State Fair Marsh Band Day

Band Day- what a day! I had the amazing opportunity to experience Band Day in its entirety- that’s 9 a.m. to 11:30 p.m., folks. Seeing all the hard work and excitement of the students was amazing and helped convert me into a band fan. And because of how excited I was to witness this annual competition, I can only imagine how happy Winchester Community High School was to WIN the competition.

Don’t make the mistake of thinking this was an easy triumph – Winchester had a lot of things against them. They are a small fish in a pool of large bands such as Anderson and Noblesville. Another disadvantage? Winchester hasn’t been in the top five since 2002 and hasn’t had a championship since 1997 – which makes this victory even sweeter.

They also had a new band director this year, Douglas Fletcher.

A little history: Fletcher took over as band director at Winchester after leaving Highland (which merged with Anderson last year). Fletcher dominated State Fair Band Day while at Highland, winning the competition four times in the last six years. And now it seems Fletcher has carried his magic over to Winchester.

Winchester swept the small band competition, scoring first place in all five categories (music, visuals, general effects, percussion and auxiliary) of the Caption Awards. Why is this important? Winning all five categories means Winchester is GOOD.

The school performed “The Road Not Taken” by Robert Frost. It was interesting to see the elements of the marching band, guard and poetry come together, and was a risk that paid off.

Hands down, one of the most exciting things about Band Day was seeing Winchester students accept their award. All of the students and faculty were overcome with emotion and it was great to see a band truly appreciative of this honor. Fletcher certainly knows how to dazzle judges and it will be interesting to see if this small band will start a new streak of dominating the competition.

Great job to all the bands!

Fighting Hunger at Fair

Want to lend a hand to others and score free stuff at the same time? Here is your chance!

Elanco and the Indiana State Fair are partnering up to fight hunger in the Indianapolis area by hosting a food drive Aug. 7. This partnership has resulted in a sweet deal- fairgoers who bring non-perishable food items to the fair that Sunday will not only help fight hunger, but they will also receive a free ticket for a return visit to the fair! (This ticket will be good for Aug. 15-19)

To give the drive a jumpstart, Indiana’s Family of Farmers has donated $5,000 worth of meat and dairy products! Officials are hoping to “stuff the truck” that will be stationed out at the fair and collect needed supplies for local pantries.

Don’t want to bring your cans to the fair? You have another chance to help out local pantries while getting in on some fair fun.

On Wednesday Aug. 3, donate non-perishable food items to Monument Circle in downtown Indianapolis from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Anyone who donates will receive a free ticket to the fair and a free lunch from the American Dairy Association of Indiana. A delicious grilled cheese in exchange for some canned foods- sounds like a great trade to me!

The food drive is part of Elanco’s Hunger Initiative and is a great way for the community to help stock local food pantries. Not only will fairgoers get free tickets and a chance to help the less fortunate, they will have a chance to learn more about food scarcity in the area. Organizations such as Gleaners, Second Helpings and Indiana’s Family of Farmers will line State Fair Blvd to provide information on helping the 300,000 people in Central Indiana who do not have enough food.

Do not miss your opportunity to give back to the Indianapolis community in a fun and easy way! Come donate canned goods to the food drive on Aug. 3 to get a free lunch and State Fair tickets – or make the fair and food donation one trip on Elanco Day Aug.7. Either way, your community support is appreciated!

Brewers' Cup: The Results

The results are in! This weekend’s Brewers’ Cup saw a record number of entries with over 1,000 hopefuls as far as Florida and even Texas. But it was Hoosiers that reined supreme! Both winners of the Guild Champion Brewery trophy and title holder of “Homebrewer of the Year” hail from Indiana.

Local brewer Michael Pearson, the top individual winner, won his second title by narrowly beating out his good friend Bill Ballinger. Talk about a bittersweet victory.

Terms like pale lager, porter and stout are all Greek to me. I will just stick with my Bud and Corona Light. But for those interested in home brewing, the competition is growing rapidly. This means more competition and just an overall fun experience for lovers of all things beer!

Ready, Set, Brew

Nothing says summer like a nice cold beer in hand. But have you ever thought about what goes into making beer? I can’t say that I have either. Then, there are people like the ones judging this weekend’s Brewers’ Cup who can identify all the different flavors in different beers.

With 23 professional brewers entering 310 different beers and 764 home brewers entering 764 beers, The Indiana State Fair Brewers’ Cup is one of the largest competitions in the country. This weekend will mark the 13^th annual competition at Farm Bureau Building on the Indiana State Fairgrounds.

Certified Beer Judges from all over the country will taste test the best brews in the Hoosier state. Winners will have the opportunity to brew their winning recipe at a local pub, rights to a traveling banner, trophy and bragging rights.

Although the event isn’t open to the public, you can catch a glimpse into the world of home brewing during the fair when all entries will be on displayed and experts will be their to answer questions on all things brewing.

Judging begins today and goes through Saturday, July 9. Stay tuned for winners and results next week!

2011 National Junior Shorthorn Show

Attending a cow competition is a lot more fun - and eventful- than I would have ever imagined. While watching the Livestock Judging Contest, I was transported into another world, where everyone wore blue jeans and even the smallest child knew what made a cow a winner.

At 8:00 a.m., the National Junior Shorthorn Show of 2011 is in full swing. Booths selling pancakes, jewelry, posters, kids' activities and more surrounded a white fence and the main arena area. Participants of other classes and family members lined up around the inside of the white fence to get the best possible look. Heifers and their owners stood stoically, proudly showing off their cows to the audience and judges.

What might surprise you is that this isn't just a show involving heifers and steers, there are many other things to do at the national competition. Since its start date on June 27, there have been contests for art, promotional posters, photography, speech, quiz bowl and even a beef cook-off.

This national show even has its own version of a pageant, in which candidates fight for the title of being Lassie Queen.

This six-day competition draws in people from all over the country. 23 states are being represented this year -including Florida, Minnesota, South Dakota and Texas.

And what makes a cow a winner? Judges say the cow worth the most profit based on strength and muscles will reign supreme.

Douglas David Paints "Farm to Fair"

The more I get to know Indiana artist Douglas David, the more I am impressed with his passion, talent and dedication.

He has won numerous awards for his paintings from Indiana Arts Commission, Lilly Endowment, Hoosier Salon and the Kokomo Art Association and his work has hung at the Indianapolis Museum of Art and the Richmond Museum of Art.

I was especially impressed with the discovery that Douglas David's artwork had been used as Indiana's license plate.

Douglas's design for the 2003-2008 Indiana license plate beat out 1400 entries and was chosen by popular vote to grace Indiana vehicles for five years..impressive!

Now, Douglas will put on a one-man show entitled "Farm to Fair," for the 2011 Indiana State Fair. Douglas's show will feature 60 of his amazing paintings, which all have been created exclusively for the fair. And let me tell you, each and every painting is fabulous.

Douglas began painting for this show on March 1st and hasn't stopped since. He is currently wrapping up his last few paintings and is thrilled about the upcoming show.

“I am excited to show almost a million people my interpretation of the fair,” said artist Douglas David. “My art will be important to people simply because they are Hoosiers.”

The show will be hung in the upper level of the magnificent Normandy Barn and will be open for all seventeen days of the fair.

If you've ever been curious about different music styles, the Diversity Music Fest is the event to attend! The Indiana Minority Business Magazine (IMBM) and Daddy Real Entertainment presents a concert that will satisfy all audiences, with its artists representing various genres, including jazz, Latin, pop, rock, country, gospel and R & B.

This concert is a unique event, offering audiences the one-of-a-kind opportunity to hear a variety of music under one roof. In fact, this concert is one of the few events of its kind in the Midwest. You must be 21 to attend and the concert is being held at the Indiana State Fair Blue Ribbon Pavilion, so you know it will be a good time! I personally have never attended a concert like this before, and I'm saddened that I will not get the chance to go.

This is a chance to see some of Indy's most talented artists for the great price of $11 ($26 for VIP), people! Perhaps the best thing about this concert is that the Diversity Music Fest will not only provide diverse bands, it will feature GOOD bands.

The concert line up boasts seven of Indy's top bands, including country group "Wildheart" and rock group "Remedy." Other bands include: Lamar Campbell and Spirit of Praise (gospel); Rob Dixon (jazz); Banda Pluma Blanca (Latin); Kontraband Muzik (pop) and Blue Soul Band (R&B).

What Better Way to kick off the Year of Soybeans than with Food!

It’s that time again. Time to start thinking about this year’s fair and all that comes with it. That includes all the tasty food! Today was the Indiana State Fair Signature Food Contest, and I was lucky enough to be there to watch and even taste. Since this year is putting Soybeans in the spotlight, each food entry utilized soybeans in different ways. From the feed fed to the cattle, tofu and soybean oil, it was a great way to showcase the versatility of the bean.

The contest started with the first round of judging from a panel that included First Lady Cheri Daniels, Indiana State Fair Queen Sara Alford and others who taste tested each and gave their input. From there, the fate of the winner is put in the hands of readers of the Indianapolis Star. It is there you can read up on all 5 of the entries and go vote for your favorite.

Look for the story and for voting to begin June 17 and you can continue to vote up until July 1. The winner – announced July8 – is named THE food of the fair will get bragging rights as well as a prime vending spot of Main Street during the fair!

2011: The Year of Soybeans

Are you on a high-protein diet? Then you're going to love the 2011 Indiana State Fair! After much contemplation and occasional discussions with the State Department of Agriculture, we are ready to celebrate soybeans and all that they mean to our state.

Soybeans produce at least twice as much protein per acre as any other major vegetable or grain crop, and soybean meal is the main food source for cows, chickens, pigs and fish, which means you are probably taking in soybeans in some form every day. And those yummy cakes, cookies and pies we all love... well, they required vegetable oil - soybean oil - in order to become yummy. So let's give it up for soybeans!

We're looking forward to working with the Indiana Soybean Alliance to promote soybeans at the fair. We are still brainstorming all the fun ways we'll incorporate this important legume into the fair, but you can count on getting lots of facts, such as:

Indiana ranks 3rd in the U.S. in soybean processing

Indiana ranks 4th in the U.S. in soybean production

Hoosier farmers produce 244 million bushels of soybeans each year

The soybean industry contributes $2.5 billion to the state's economy

In case you weren't aware, our midway rides and tractor shuttles have been operating on soy biodiesel fuel for years, so soybeans aren't just about food production. And if you don't think soybeans can be fun, maybe you've never run into Bennie the Bean roaming around the Pioneer Our Land Pavilion. He's a fun bean.

'Tis the Season...

It's become as much of a tradition as trimming the tree.

The Christmas Gift and Hobby Show has been going on for 61 years now! Each year, there's always something new and different, but by and large it's the same wonderful atmosphere of unique gift ideas, yummy treats and occasional surprises.

Surprises? Yes, there are surprises. The ladies in this photo were surprised to find out that they were selected to receive some "Random Acts of Christmas" gifts, which included money that could be used on anything at the show and gift certificates for products and services by show vendors. Over the course of the show, more than $3,000 will end up being given away! How can you win? Well, it helps if you and your friends all wear reindeer antlers.

Regardless of whether or not you receive any random acts of kindness, you are sure to get your holiday shopping season started off on the right foot. What I like most about the show is that you can get so many personalized gifts. You can get your kid's name imprinted on any number of things, and you will also find a ton of things that you would have never found just wandering through the mall.

So if you haven't made this a part of your family's holiday traditions, you might want to start. And for all the husbands who are just "along for the ride," find the chocolate stand on the east side of the builidng. That alone is worth the trip. Merry Christmas!

Habitat House Heads Home

If you visited us during the fair and wandered around the northside of the grounds behind the FFA Pavilion, then you no doubt saw plenty of folks hard at work, and I don't mean we fair employees (well, we were working hard, too). But I'm talking about Habitat for Humanity workers and volunteers who were busy constructing a 5-bedroom, 2,500 square-foot ranch house that would eventually become the home of Tamika Allen and her five children.

The crew worked overtime, with assistance from groups like the Indiana Fever and Indiana Pacers, to get the home built during the fair's first 15 days before being opened up to the public the final weekend of the fair.

Now, the home is at its real home: 2062 Bellefontaine St., just a few miles south of the Fairgrounds. It took Wolfe Movers about three hours to take the three-mile trek, but things went very smoothly.

So it's time to say goodbye to Indiana's first relocated Habitat home. Seems like we were just getting used to having you. Not to worry, though. We'll be building another one next year.

#1 Fair fan honored by Governor

Liz Bowman has made lots of great memories out here at the fair, but nothing will top what happened today. The 83-year-old Indianapolis woman was honored by the fair and Governor Mitch Daniels for her unwavering devotion to the Great Indiana State Fair.

It's hard to believe, but she's been to every day of every fair for the last 62 years! And she doesn't just ride the tractor shuttle around all day. She still visits different spots and loves all the people she gets to meet.

Take a look at today's recognition. She called today the best day of her life outside of when her children were born, and her display of emotion was quite touching. Thanks for coming to the fair all those years, Liz... we love you!

Home is where the heart is

There's the old adage "home is where the heart is," and that, perhaps, is none more so true than with Tamika Allen, who got the keys to her first house on Friday.

But this wasn't any home build -- throughout the past three months, Habitat for Humanity spearheaded an effort to get hundreds of volunteers from several organizations to help build the Allen family a home.

Furthermore, volunteers helped assemble and paint the home here at the Indiana State Fairgrounds, just east of the DNR complex. The house will then be moved Sept. 14 to its new home off Bellafontaine Street in Indianapolis. Habitat officials said this is only the second time that any chapter throughout the nation has built a home not on its final location.

Even though Tamika has her keys, she'll have plenty of entertaining to do in the next 2-1/2 days: The house is open through Sunday for all fairgoers to walk through.

"It's been a long year, but I've finally made it today," Tamika said outside her new house.

It was a heck of a housewarming. Boomer from the Indiana Pacers, as well as reps from various sponsors, such as Kroger, Dow AgroSciences and the Indiana State Fairgrounds, stopped by to drop off presents and share stories about the build.

"It was a very challenging and ambitious schedule," said Dean Illingworth, executive director of Habitat for Humanity of Greater Indianapolis. "The heat didn't slow us down. In fact, there was one day we were ahead of schedule."

"Goode" Video Wins Go Hog Wild Indiana YouTube Contest

OK - I've got a public confession to make. When I started my internship at the Indiana State Fair on June 2, I didn't know the difference between a steer and a swine. Sure, I know what cows and pigs are, but those fancy terms went WAY over my head.

I've come a long way. Anybody know what a Red Wattle Hog is? I do, I do! How about a Shropshire Market Lamb? Yep, I know that one, too. Denae, the Indiana State Fair Queen, tricked me into eating goat...and I even held a fish! This is big stuff for a city-slicker like me. In fact, I even had the pleasure of riding a donkey with my counterpart, Kris Karol, earlier this week. So now I can officially say..."This ain't my first rodeo!"

But I digress...In the midst of all this fun, the Indiana State Fair staff, along with Indiana Pork and Live Nation, found time to watch the entries for our Go Hog Wild Indiana YouTube Contest. A big THANK YOU to all the participants. With 931 views, the winner is....Big Mikey, Cris, and Little Ham, Addie Goode! Congrats to the Goode family on an awesome YouTube video.

Last night, Mike Platt, Executive Director for Indiana Pork, along with Denae Pyle and Porkchop, presented the $250 check to the Goode family. The runner-up, Amanda Falcone, received The Other White Meat Grill Set.

The best part of the night? I got to see Addie's face as she climbed inside the antique firetruck to lead the Daily Parade...and then...PORKCHOP arrived on-site! Addie waited all week to see her favorite fair friend. Here's a picture from last night; you can see Addie admiring Porkchop.

From the backyard to the State Fair: The best BBQ dishes

When it comes to barbecue, I've really only tried making such dishes myself a couple of times. This is partly due to my lack of culinary skills but also because I don't have a fancy-schmancy grill (actually, all I have is a crock pot and a tabletop Food Network grill).

My issue is of no concern to the contestants at Wednesday's inaugural Shoup's Country Backyard BBQ Cookoff at the Indiana State Fair. Some of the 15 entries brought in giant, fancy grills, while at least one other relied on an open pit to roast his meal.

Shoup's awarded medals to the top three winners in each of the four categories -- loin, ribs, open and hogburger -- in addition to medals and prizes to the Grand Champion and Reserve Champion, both of which scored the best once their entries for all four categories were added up. The Grand Champion even received a gas grill, $250, embroidered apron and chair, chef's hat and more.

And don't think every dish had pork in it -- one featured asparagus covered with cilantro and blue cheese sauce. Of course, there were also ribs and even pork-stuffed red peppers.

Barn-naming honors Pioneer Village founder

Since he founded Pioneer Village almost 50 years ago, Mauri Williamson has worked to preserve and present history to visitors in the small collection of old west buildings, antiques and farm machinery at the Indiana State Fair.

On Wednesday, Mauri became a part of that history when fair officials renamed the Pin-Framed Barn the "Williamson Pin-Frame Barn" during a special ceremony.

Fair officials kept the unveiling a secret and teased Mauri telling him they wanted to give him something that would last for a long time. Mauri, still with his signature sense of humor, quipped, "A car?" No, Mauri, not a car, but something that will likely last even longer -- his name on a building in Pioneer Village, one of the most popular attractions at the Indiana State Fair.

Pioneer Village began in 1961 as a simple collection of antique tools and has since grown to include an opry house, several vendors selling old-time goods like pottery and grain and many other attractions.

Come hungry, leave happy on $2 Tuesday

I love trying new foods, so when I saw the Indiana State Fair was bringing back its $2 Tuesday promotions for today, I was excited. In case you haven't heard, many concessionaires are selling $2 portions of their foods today (full list of vendors below photos) and many midway rides are also only $2. You can even get into the fair for $2 by getting a voucher at www.turkeyhill.com/indianastatefair!

So, back to my excitement. I was so excited that I sat down with my girlfriend last night, made a list of all the $2 foods we wanted to snack on and even drew a map of the fairgrounds plotting the food vendors' locations in relation to the attractions and exhibits we still wanted to see. What's wrong with that? I want to have a yummy AND efficient evening.

Off State Fair Blvd., the Red Barn is selling $2 "pig ears," which are just smaller versions of elephant ears. I wonder if we ever did $1 Tuesdays if they'd do "guinea pig ears?"

The Fair's most dedicated fan - Ever!

Elizabeth Bowman isn't your typical fairgoer. In fact, there isn't much typical about her.

"Liz" is an 83-year-old Hoosier transplant. She moved here from Florida when she was 19 and discovered the Indiana State Fair when she was 21. She's been coming ever since. And I don't just mean that she's stopped out to the fair here and there over the years. I mean that she has come to the fair EVERY DAY of EVERY FAIR for 62 years! Can you believe that? I know that I couldn't... but it's true.

These days, Liz usually strolls up to the ticket window at Gate 1 on 38th Street around 9 a.m. where she purchases her ticket and makes her way into the fair. After checking in with her friends in the information booth to get her $3 wristband for the tractor shuttle, she'll maybe sit down and have a bite before making her way around the fair.

She is a woman of incredible faith and tons of resiliency. If you see her when you are out and about during the fair, tell her "Hi." She's a self-proclaimed "people person." And in case you are wondering, she doesn't just stay on the shuttle all day long. Word on the street is that she even stopped in Celebration Park the other day to take a turn on the mechanical bull. Can your Grandma do that?

Fried mealworms: The newest fair food?

When it comes to the stars of this year’s crop of fair food, everyone’s been talking about the deep-fried butter and doughnut burger, but what about the fried mealworms?

Purdue University’s Tom Turpin, an etymologist by trade, grossed out and intrigued a packed house in the Pioneer Hi-Bred Our Land Pavilion on Saturday by sautéing mealworms in butter and then feeding them to the audience during his “Let’s Cook Some Bugs” demonstration.

“Where else can you get free fair food?” Turpin asked. Clearly, some people in the audience also understood the adage “nothing in life is free,” as in tasting the mealworms would cost them their lunch.

For those that were brave enough to eat the mealworms, they described the taste as “peanut-ty,” “like shellfish” and, my personal favorite, “I just never tasted anything like this before.”

Before you ask, yes, Turpin has been grilling grubs and other bugs for 35 years. He said he tried it as a way to offer something different to a 4-H roundup at the time. Needless to say, mission accomplished.

Holy Cow! Uh, I mean, Holy Pig! I’m here at the 2010 Great Indiana State Fair, and I’m busy meeting our fairgoers! Have you attended the State Fair “Year of Pigs” yet? Before time runs out…I wanted to let you all know that I am excited to be a part of the American Diabetes Association’s “Kiss a Pig” fundraiser to help the 24 million Americans who suffer from diabetes. How much of a Hoosier are you?

Having lived in Indiana for only a year now, my knowledge of the Hoosier state goes something like this: It's located between Illinois and Ohio, people really like the Colts and everyone calls everyone else a "Hoosier," even though no one really can explain with any certainty what the word means.

Being that outsider, I took refuge in learning that today is "Hoosier Heritage Day," so I picked up the camera and trotted over to State Fair Boulevard to take in all the history I could handle from educational and historical organizations in an attempt to educate my poor Michigan-raised mind.

Here's what I learned:

I had no idea how old the state's universities are. For example, I spoke with this calligraphy artist (at left) -- who will write out your name for free on a piece of paper -- and he said he was in attire from the 1800-1816 period. The woman next to him was fanning a Ball State University fan, to which I replied "I guess that's appropriate -- Ball State was around back then." Well, not really, as I soon learned only Vincennes University -- not even IU or Purdue -- was around back then.

During World War I, the battery commander often used this telescope at right to peer into the distance to spot enemy artillery rounds. Doug Blackford with the Hoosier Dougboys, a historical organization, said soldiers, like with Indianapolis' 150th Field Artillery, would then fire their rounds. Overseas fighting at that time was dangerous, he said, noting soldiers didn't have helmets or respirators. Also, did you know that the 150th is still around today, almost 100 years after its founding?

Not much of a war history fan? Then test your knowledge with the Indiana Historical Bureau's state trivia, the Indiana Historical Society's timeline of Indiana politics, or any of the several other displays and demonstrations going on all day!

Where can I find a woman like that?

She might not be Jesse's girl, but Elaine Wissel is certainly Rick's girl. The Beech Grove woman was first in line to get into tonight's free Rick Springfield show, securing her spot under the Hoosier Lottery Grandstand by 8 a.m.

You think you like Rick Springfield? You're no match for Wissel: She's seen the '80s heartthrob 10 times -- THIS YEAR. I can only counter by saying I've seen Hedrick's Racing Pigs 10 times this year ... but I digress. Wissel's fervent fandom also includes additional countless concerts she's attended over her lifetime and the T-shirt she scored when she saw the pop rocker 10 years ago during a special stint in Las Vegas.

Going ga-ga over Ghiradelli chocolate at the fair (WITH RECIPE)

It’s no secret that I have a sweet tooth. In just the first few days of this year’s fair, I’ve consumed deep-fried Oreos and cookie dough, Ellison Bakery cookies and cupcakes decorated like pigs. Even Famous Amos or Mrs. Fields wouldn’t be able to keep up with my baked (or fried) food binge.

It should then come as no surprise that I was front and center at Tuesday’s Ghiradelli Chocolate Championship in the Ellison Bakery Home & Family Arts Building attempting to photograph decadent desserts without lunging myself onto the Culinary Arts Stage kitchen counter. Officials must have known my reputation – one asked me to step back because I was getting too close to the kitchen area.

Judges tasted 36 exhibits, awarding first through third places. All three top finishers walked away with a Ghiradelli prize basket and apron, with first capturing an additional $150 cash prize and second scoring a $50 prize.

First place went to Markleville’s Mary Alice Collins and her “Ghiradelli White Chocolate Macadamia-Pecan-Coconut Cake” (see photo at left of a judge taste-testing the winner). I’m not a fan of coconut, but I have to say her cake was among the prettiest that I saw. Second place went to Morgantown’s Beverly Rossell and her “Chocolate Malted Towers” and third place went to Greenwood’s Hae Won Miller and her “Ghiradelli Chocolate Almond Bars.”

All this talk of Ghiradelli chocolate got you in the mood to bake? Me, too.

To satisfy your sweet tooth, you can either scope out the entries in the basement of the Ellison Bakery Home & Family Arts Building or fire up the oven. The following is Collins’ award-winning recipe:

Ghiradelli White Chocolate Macadamia-Peach-Coconut Cake

Yields: 12 to 16 servings

8 oz. white chocolate baking bar

2-1/2 cups sifted cake flour

2 tablespoons baking powder

¾ cup unsalted butter, at room temperature

1-1/2 cups granulated Domino Sugar

1 pinch salt

4 large eggs

1-1/4 cups milk

1 teaspoon coconut extract

½ cup macadamia nuts, chopped and roasted

2 fresh peaches or 1 cup, chopped very fine and drained on a paper towel

Heat oven to 350 degrees. Grease 3- to 8-inch round cake pans on the sides and bottom. Flour the sides and place a piece of cut wax paper in the bottom. Sift together the flour and baking powder. Melt the 8 oz. bar of white chocolate in the top of a double boiler over hot water or melt in the microwave. Set aside to cool to room temperature. With a mixer, beat butter, sugar and salt until fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time, beating after each addition until smooth. Add the flour and milk alternately beginning with the flour and ending with flour. Add the white chocolate, coconut extract, chopped peaches, and macadamia nuts just until smooth. Divide the batter evenly between the 3- to 8-inch pans. Bake for about 35 minutes or until a cake tester comes out with just a few moist crumbs clinging on it. Cool about 15 minutes. Unmold onto a rack and cool completely.

State Fair gets "KISSed"

Okay, I'm not the biggest KISS fan in the world, but I was one of the 15,000 people in the sold out Hoosier Lottery Grandstand Monday night excited to see the masked men do their thing... and they didn't disappoint. It's really kind of hard to believe they can still crank out the tunes like that - especially in 90-degree heat - as "experienced" as they are.

The guys all arose from underneath the stage to start the show and that was only the start of the special effects. Gene Simmons spiked flaming torches, Tommy Thayer shot fireworks out of his guitar, Eric Singer and his drumkit were lifted to the top of the stage, and that doesn't even include the vast array of other flames, fireworks and confetti.

I enjoyed being part of the KISS Army for one night and am still amazed by the two guys who showed up in full Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley gear (they must have posed for a thousand photos!). And I was most impressed when the band took a couple minutes to tell the crowd about their Wounded Warrior fund in which they donate a dollar of each sold ticket to our soldiers hurt in combat. The current tally is more than $105,000!

So say what you want about these facepainted rockers, but they leave it all out on the stage night after night... and they certainly know how to close out a show. Check it out...

Jeep Rocks & Road Tour Comes to State Fair

Driving through the concrete jungle of Indianapolis, I don’t get too many opportunities to ride up steep dirt mounds or ungracefully bounce over logs and rocks. However, the Jeep Rocks & Road Ride & Drive exhibit at the 2010 Indiana State Fair affords visitors that opportunity – and more. The exhibit has normal road and off-road courses and a variety of Jeep products where fairgoers can get behind the wheel. It’s free with general fair admission and runs through this evening, Aug. 8 on the west side of the Best Way Disposal Infield.

"Me and My Gang" First in line for Rascal Flatts

A group of young women from Tipton, Ind. woke up at 3:30 a.m. Saturday morning to claim the coveted front row for Rascal Flatts, who perform this evening at 8 p.m. at the State Fair's Hoosier Lottery Grandstand.

Lorie, Kayla and Courtney, three friends and Rascal Flatts super fans, arrived at the Fairgrounds around 6:15 a.m. and have been sitting underneath the Grandstand ever since. Tonight's concert will be Lorie's third time seeing Rascal Flatts perform. Kayla is looking forward to her fourth time, but Courtney takes-the-cake; tonight will be her sixth show. All three fans purchased tickets the first day they were on sale.

Since I've dubbed Courtney the Super Fan, you'll have to check out the video; she talks about the extra-special surprise she received from the Rascal Flatts Fan Club!

Even during the short time I talked with the girls, the line began to grow. Another group of friends from Central Indiana arrived around 8 a.m., but they were smart enough to bring playing cards! When I asked Lorie, Kayla and Courtney if they would make friends with their newest neighbors, their answer was a resounding yes!

While they wait until track seating opens the evening, the girls will take this time to people watch, enjoy fair smells and maybe even play some cards. If they get hungry enough, one friend might venture out for a deep-fried fair snack, while the others hold her place.

You may not be willing to wake up in the middle of the night, but if you're looking for something to do tonight, tickets are still available for tonight's show! Come hang out at the fair...and when you see the girls in the front row, you'll know they've waited all day for the chance to see Chris Young, Kellie Pickler, and Rascal Flatts. And nope, don't worry - they aren't Drinkin' Themselves Lonely or Wearin' Red High Heels...but they certainly got Their Wish!

...And We're Off!

It's Day 1 of the Great Indiana State Fair, and it couldn't have been a better start! Bright blue skies and cooler temperatures surrounded Fair Executive Director Cindy Hoye, Governor Daniels, Lt. Governor Skillman and dozens of others in Dow AgroSciences Celebration Park for this morning's opening ceremonies.

Band Day usually dominates fair headlines on opening day now that the Giant Hot Air Balloon Race has been moved to the fair's second Saturday (Aug. 14), and the high school marchers put on some great performances for the thousands of fans in the Hoosier Lottery Grandstand.

Personally, I have yet to try much of the fair food - you need to pace yourself when you're here all 17 days, but I imagine a Dairy Bar milkshake isn't far off in my future. I have already heard great reviews on the Garbage Burger, this year's signature food, which is in all of the Pork Tents. The deep-fried butter seems to be going over well, too. By the way, that is not a stick of butter that's deep-fried and put on a stick. It's more like a doughnut hole that combines sugar, cinnamon and butter inside that yummy funnel cake batter.

Okay, I've just made myself hungry. Time to go get some fair food.

Everything's bigger in ... Indiana?

People might say everything’s bigger in Texas but, from the look of things around the fairgrounds the last week, the Indiana State Fair might be ready to take that claim to fame.

First, there were the trusses of the 71-foot long Boy Scouts Legacy Project Bridge that went up the last two weeks (see photo at left). The entire bridge is expected to be completed by Aug. 6. Then, on Monday, crews were busy installing the 25-foot-tall “God Bless America” sculpture in the Dow AgroSciences Celebration Park on the northwest side of the fairgrounds. The J. Seward Johnson piece of public art, based on Grant Wood’s iconic “American Gothic” painting, will be on display during the fair, Aug. 6-22.

It's kind of confusing for some, but after I won Miss Indiana State Fair Queen in August 2009, I gave up my title at the county level, and Kristen Krizman (ever-so-graciously!), accepted her new title as Miss Kosciusko County 2009. Kristen found out she was the new county queen while driving to a movie with her mom and brother.

She did an amazing job as my 1st Runner-Up, but Kristen really took on the task of being county queen during the Fall, Winter, and Spring. At our most recent fair, Kristen handed down her crown - it's such a special feeling! A big congrats to all of the young women who participated in Miss Kosciusko County - way to go!

I was lucky to go back to my home county fair, but I visit a new county nearly every day! It's very exciting, and I've noticed a lot of Hoosiers have the same questions, no matter where I am in the state. Here are a few...

Is the crown heavy?
Yes! But you get used to it.

Why do you have a brown sash?
In many pictures, you'll see me wearing brown, "pig skin" suede sash. It was given to me to help celebrate Year of Pigs, and I love it!

Do you style your own hair?
Yep! Pretty proud to say I can do my own hair in about 15 minutes.

Is your hair natural?
Yes! Red...curly...thanks, Dad.

What's the best part about being the Miss Indiana State Fair Queen?
The incredible people you meet along the way. There are some perks, too. The leadership and example I can show other people - especially county queen contestants. I really love everything about it!

Sprucing up the old "house"

If you complain about having to clean your abode, try scrubbing down and sprucing up a 250-acre "house." That's what crews are busy doing with just three weeks to go until fair time at the Indiana State Fairgrounds.

The fairgrounds doesn't magically look immaculate for the Indiana State Fair; a lot of work goes into ensuring the State Fairgrounds looks nice for its nearly 1 million visitors.

Below are just some shots of prep work going on around the fairgrounds this week:

Teams are busy laying down the concrete foundation for the Boy Scouts of America's Legacy Bridge Project. Once completed, the bridge will be 71 feet long of Indiana Hardwood Lumber just north of the Speed Barns.

What? You didn't think the crosswalk stripes came as naturally white as Dairy Bar vanilla ice cream, did you?

There's been plenty of activity near the Swine Barn, too. Appropriate enough, given it is the "Year of Pigs!"

Did we mention it's "Year of Pigs?" You won't have to go far to find your porky pals at the fair this year. The gift shop will sell everything from bacon bandages to bacon-flavored lip balm. I wonder if my girlfriend has egg-flavored lip balm -- that'd be a way to start the day! Pucker up, dear!

Enjoy old tractors and farm machinery? There's plenty of each now just west of Pioneer Village.

This space looks pretty empty now, but don't be fooled -- it will be home to the Habitat for Humanity AgHome soon enough.

Our Executive Director, Cindy Hoye, 18 days before opening day of the Indiana State Fair. Lots of reading material, a few phone messages, and plenty of e-mails. Don't miss the caffeine and her "when pigs fly" ornament, hanging from the computer!

Moo-ve on over to the Junior National Hereford Expo

When I think of cows, I think mostly of T-Bone steaks, hamburgers and other things that belong on my grill. For Pennsylvania’s Austin Howe, well, his story is much more “moo-ving.”

The hefty herefords are a way of life and animals that have brought his family together. The 19-year-old, the oldest of six siblings showing cattle, is at this week’s 2010 Junior National Hereford Expo at the Indiana State Fairgrounds.

“I love to see them grow up and learn how to be responsible and mature around everybody,” Howe said of his siblings.

Young people like Howe from all around the country are trying to turn their passion for cattle into cash by winning any of an array of competitions, including showmanship, photography and team fitting, where three-member teams have 45 minutes to fit their heifers for a panel of judges. The show runs through Saturday.

Competitors take their bulls and heifers seriously – you have to feed them the right kind of food at the right time, in addition to keeping them well groomed. That was easy to see in the West Pavilion on Thursday, as youth were busy blow-drying and brushing their bovines – even a woman on her wedding day would be jealous of all the attention these animals were receiving.

If that weren’t enough, most cows were comfortably lying or standing in front of one of hundreds of high-powered fans. These animals have better air flow in a barn than I’ve had in some of my apartments.

I suppose it all makes sense, right? Treat the cattle right … and then milk them for all they’re worth.

Goin' Hog Wild for Piggly-Wiggly's!

Hey friends!

Guess what I found out today?! If you remember, I said I grew up on a hog farm. Well…I still do live on the farm. I found out today that we are getting another load of baby pigs! This means I get to help! Now, truthfully I haven’t helped with the pigs in awhile because I have been off at school. I’m really quite excited to see all those ear-piercing, not-necessarily-pink, quick, little piggly-wigglys. Maybe we will end up with a few pictures I can show all of you!

Speaking of pictures, I was going through some old 4-H pictures and found a few that just happen to fit this “Pig Crazy Queen” very well. They are from my first year in 4-H. Enjoy!

The makings of a "Pig Crazy Queen!"

Last weekend, I was so excited to be at my first official County Fair where there was dust-a-flyin’ and boots-a-stompin’! I was in Blackford County at their livestock auction where everyone had their boots on, and I was able to welcome everyone to the auction and take pictures with the 4-Hers and their Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion animals. An auction is truly a time where 4-Hers have a mix of emotions.

Being in 4-H for ten years, I know how it feels. You work for weeks or months with a hog, a steer, sheep, goats, chickens, etc., and they can become your pet. But the auction is the part of the fair where you sell your animal, if you choose, and it can be a time of joy, sadness, heartbreak, or liberation...or all these emotions at once! I just want to congratulate all 4-Hers for making it through the week of your fair and all the effort you put into getting to that point. I also want to thank all the buyers who come out to a 4-H Livestock Auction specifically. Without the support of family, friends, businesses, organizations, and community supporters, 4-H wouldn’t exist. It means an incredible amount to the 4-Hers that you continue to support them as well as the 4-H program.

Quarter midget racers bring big skills to race day - UPDATED with video

They drive quarter-scale cars, but have full focus on and off the race track.

Drivers at the Quarter Midget Association’s Eastern Grands have spent years modifying their skills and race cars – some of which easily exceed $7,000 – all for a chance to be tops in their class. The 2010 installment of the national event is going on this week at the Indiana State Fairgrounds and more than 500 drivers are all vying for the top award, the Brick trophy.

Each driver, who range from 5 to 16 years old, comes from one of 32 states or Canada, has his or her own philosophy on what it takes to win.

“You have to have common sense, you have to anticipate a little and you have to be smooth,” said Michael Ostdiek, a 13-year-old from Minnesota who’s been racing since he was 5.

Pennsylvania’s Rich Sweeney said there are several factors that come into play once racers are on the concrete 1/20 of a mile “Mini-Indy Speedway” at the fairgrounds.

“Everything has to be right. The car, the track, the judges – even the flag,” said the 14-year-old, whose car can get up to near 50 mph. “Everything has to go right to win.”

Winning is only one small part of the sport for these pint-sized quarter-midget drivers, their friends and family.

Michael’s mother, Teresa Ostdiek, likened the sport to 4-H, in that everyone gets to build close relationships with one another. There are other perks, too, she noted.

“They continue to become more confident,” she said. “The kids that are behind a wheel are sometimes better drivers than those with a license.”

Don't judge a book by its cover at clearance sales!

When I was a child, I would often accompany my parents and older sister to discount book sales and, many times, I’d walk out with a stack of books taller than me.

There’s nothing like heaving huge piles of books to the side before finding that one story you’ve been scouring the earth for. It’s also refreshing picking up a text you never expected to find or buy, but the price that day was just right for the book to make it into your tote bag.

Perhaps I’ll relive my childhood days during this weekend’s Half Price Books Indianapolis Clearance Sale at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. The book store chain is bringing in 200,000 books, mostly older and newer titles – but not current bestsellers. The chain will also offer up CDs, DVDs and VHS tapes.

The best part? Everything is $3 or less. If that’s not incentive enough, maybe I’ll be lucky and be one of the first 200 shoppers each day – those fortunate folks get free tote bags.

The show is free and runs 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday in the Ag-Hort Building – that’s the big building by the Midway arch.

Good thing there’s plenty of parking near the building – I might need a close spot if I once again walk out with a stack of books taller than me!

Here are some excerpts from Denae's first blog post:
"There is a children's book called 'Princess Pig' by Eileen Spinelli, and it's a story about a sash from a local beauty pageant that blows to a barnyard and ends up around the neck of Pig. She wakes up and thinks it's a sign that she must be a princess. Princess Pig is treated like a princess by all the barnyard animals, but she comes to find out that princesses aren't allowed to roll in the mud or sleep in late. Pony, another character in the story says 'It’s a fine thing to be a pig, if a pig is what you are.'

The last day of the 2009 Indiana State Fair came around, and all 88 girls were anxiously awaiting the outcome of the 2010 Queen. The judges had deliberated and the emcees were now announcing the Queens Court, and then finally the Queen. Like Princess Pig, unexpectedly a sash blew around my neck and a massive crown was placed on my head by the 2009 Queen, Haleigh Yergler. And that is where my escapade began.

I grew up on a hog farm and would sit in the pens with the baby pigs when I was little. As we got a little older, we got roped in to the “oh-so-fun” job of sorting hundreds of baby pigs into pens. Then we got a little bit older than that, and had the even more fun job (hint: I am being very sarcastic!) of loading out pigs when they were just slightly larger. Is 250 pounds a little larger than a 3-week piglet weighing about 10 pounds?! I think so. I’ll just say that the best memories I have weren’t when we were loading out 500 250-lbs hogs. I’ll give my Dad the credit for doing it over and over and over! But those hog barns are where I learned what it meant to work hard and where my family really bonded. If it weren’t for my Dad and those hundreds of pigs in and out of those barns, I would never have ended up being a 10-year 4-H member showing hogs at the Kosciusko County Fair every summer as well.

In the 'Princess Pig', Pony says 'It’s a fine thing to be a pig, if a pig is what you are.' Even with a sash and crown, I am always going to be me. Yes, the title of the “Indiana State Fair Queen” means I will be traveling around the state of Indiana all summer and being the hostess at the State Fair, but I’ll be me the entire way. I am a country girl at heart and can’t get enough bacon or Country music. It’s also very hard for me to let people wait and serve me, when I am driven to serve others. I just pray that God uses me this summer to serve others through this experience!

So I am truly a 'Pig Crazy Queen,' and I am very excited to reign over this summer and during the Indiana State Fair -- the Year of Pigs -- as your Miss Indiana State Fair Queen 2010."

¡Ay, caramba! State Fairgrounds to host 10th annual El Dia de la Familia

My colleague, Kris, is a native Michiganian, but he’s temporarily flocked south to attend graduate school at IUPUI. Since I love Indiana, and he’s new to the area, I will occasionally (OK, I admit, it’s more like “often”) recommend places to go, people he should meet, restaurants to try, and give him other advice. Just ‘dub me “Queen of Hoosier Hospitality.”

So naturally, when Kris told me he’s yet to find a great place to eat Mexican food, I offered up a laundry list of restaurants. I guess that means this blog entry goes out to Kris and my fellow Hoosiers.

One of my favorite authentic Mexican restaurants, El Sol de Tala, will be selling food at the festival this weekend! Even though Mexico is about 1,500 miles away from Indianapolis, it doesn’t mean the food changes when you eat at El Sol. I really hope they’ll serve up some guac and warm chips. Another vendor to check out while you’re at the festival would be Restaurante Oaxaca. If they bring their special green sauce, you’ll need to find the nearest margarita vendor to help cool your taste buds.

We all love great food, but if you’re looking for something more than tacos and tamales, there will be plenty of music and free family-friendly fun. Here are all the details you’ll need:

‘New face of Hip-Hop’ coming to the Fairgrounds

I’m a Detroit native, so country music doesn’t exactly run in my genes, but start talking hip-hop and, well, now we’re in business. Kurtis Blow. Run DMC. Outkast. The list goes on and on …

Thankfully, the Great Indiana State Fair is, once again, offering a diverse mix of entertainers at the Hoosier Lottery Grandstand by bringing in new hip-hop sensation Drake on Aug. 13.

The Canadian-born rapper released his highly anticipated debut album, “Thank Me Later,” last week and is already generating buzz in the media. The New York Times has gone as far as saying Drake is “the new face of hip-hop.”

The L.A. Times said Drake’s pop hooks are an “unholy amalgamation of the Backstreet Boys, Phil Collins and Mase.” I’m not sure how you mix those three sounds together but, rest assured, I’m interested to see how any artist can pull off that concoction!

Being a former music reporter, I’m also always interested in seeing, listening and supporting new acts and Drake is about as fresh things get right now in the hip-hop world.

You can “thank me later” for giving you the scoop on Drake by coming out and supporting an up-and-coming musician trying to make his mark in an ultra-competitive genre. Plus, you can grab a deep-fried Twinkie before the show – where else can you dine and be entertained like that??

Hundreds of Volunteers Lend Helping Hands for AgHome

What do you get when 200 volunteers, generous sponsors, thousands of nails, and hundreds of
2 x 4’s come together on a bright, sunny morning? A five-bedroom, two-bathroom Habitat for Humanity home!

The Indiana State Fairgrounds hosted a panel build where board, commission, and staff members worked alongside hundreds of sponsor and Habitat for Humanity of Greater Indianapolis (HFHGI) volunteers. Sheila Carlson, HFHGI Development and Community Relations Coordinator, was one of this morning’s hardworking crew members.

HFHGI has built more than 370 homes since its inception in 1987, but this home is unique. Several sponsors have stepped-up to help make Allen’s dream of home ownership a reality and showcase the impact of Indiana’s agriculture, a $25 billion industry.

Now that the panels are completed, full construction will take place on the north side of the Fairgrounds during this year’s fair. Normally, a Habitat home is built in six weeks, but Allen’s home will be completed in 15 days and then transported to its permanent site in Central Indianapolis.

A big thank you to everyone who gave their time and effort today! We hope you’ll consider touring the Habitat for Humanity home at this year’s Indiana State Fair, Aug. 6 – 22!

Retirees, teenagers put best foot forward at State Fair’s Job Fair

What do you do if you don’t want a full-time job or a part-time job? How about a seasonal job?

Such was the situation for Pendleton’s Teresa Mason, who came out to Thursday’s Indiana State Fair Job Fair in hopes of landing a temporary Fair position.

“I’m a people person, so I like being around crowds,” said Mason, a 1-year-old retired school teacher and customer service supervisor. "I find it fascinating to watch different kinds of people and interact with them, so I think this is a perfect run of people coming through the gates.”

We had nearly 1,500 job-seekers turn out for about 400 temporary positions at the Indiana State Fair, set this year for Aug. 6-22. Grounds, security, education and other departments all held interviews with applicants, which ranged from teenagers to retirees and Hoosiers to Kentuckians, in the Farm Bureau Building.

Monique Andurson and her brother, Chaz Johnson, weren’t going to let something so little as living in another state deter them from applying for jobs.

The Louisville, Ky. siblings, who have family living in Indianapolis, made the 120-mile trek and were the first in line at 8 a.m. – even though the fair started at 3 p.m. Johnson said a friend had told him the fair started earlier, but that he and his sister toughed it out most of the day because they wanted to be there a “good reasonable time” before anybody else.

“I need something that’s going to help me out,” said Andurson, 17, as she filled out an application. “I need money in my pocket.”

If you couldn’t make it to the job fair, but still want to submit an application, you can do so by stopping in the Employment Office in the Public Safety Building at the Fall Creek Parkway entrance from June 8-18. Reporter Survives 100 MPH Fairgrounds Tour

"I thought we were going to die."

That's how WISH-TV sports reporter Ashley Adamson categorized her recent four-lap spin around the State Fairgrounds' famous one-mile Track of Champions. She took to the track in a special two-seat Silver Crown race car during a promotion for tonight's 57th running of the Hoosier Hundred, a traditional part of Indy 500 weekend for generations of race fans.

In the front seat of the car (the seat with the steering wheel and gas pedal), sat legendary driver Jack Hewitt. Hewitt has started more United States Silver Crown races than any driver in history (162) and is the winningest driver in series history (23). Still, Adamson never got too comfortable in her backseat position.

"It felt like we were defying gravity," she said. "It gives me a much better appreciation for what driving one of these takes."

Adamson is no "sissy." She's an accomplished athlete as a four-time Colorado high school State Track Champion and a former member of an Irish women's rugby team that won the Women's European Invitational in 2003 (she was studying in Dublin at the time). But driving and sliding around the Fairgrounds' dirt oval at speeds of 100 miles per hour takes some getting used to, no matter what kind of athlete you are.

"I didn't know what it would be like," she said. "I used to cover dirt races in New York and I didn't understand how much skill and nerve you need for this. I guess I can cross this off my 'Bucket List.'"

Now that she knows, would she do it again?

"I'd love to!" she said.

Brave girl... or maybe just not too bright.

A Different Kind of “Fayre”

Ever heard of “laughter yoga”? Ha Ha - me neither! How about a “Channeled Healing Meditation”? Nope? Perhaps you’ve attended a “Oneness Blessing”? Not that either?

Now is your chance to check out all this and more at the upcoming Spirit Fayre – the largest Mind, Body, Spirit Expo in Indiana! The Fayre takes place this weekend, May 22-23, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., at the State Fairgrounds’ Grand Hall.

Celia has actually been described as “a cross between an earthy Enya, Joan Baez, and Tina Fey.”

Celia uses this cool “looping” technology to perform duets, trios, and even larger ensembles with herself. If you’ve ever seen Michael Kelsey perform on the Main Street Stage during the State Fair, then you are familiar with this. They both use this technique of recording sound and looping tracks to harmonize with themselves. The result is an amazing listening experience!

And for the record, according to Wikipedia: Laughter Yoga is a form of yoga employing self-triggered laughter. The "laughter" is physical in nature, and does not necessarily involve humor or comedy. The concept of Laughter Yoga is based on scientific fact that the body cannot differentiate between fake and real laughter. Now that’s something to laugh about. J

Indy's Biggest KISS Fan

Meet Linda Bestwick, a seemingly normal middle-aged suburbanite… or is she?

Linda showed up at the State Fairgrounds ticket office at 10 a.m. May 13 to get tickets for KISS’ August 9 Show at the Indiana State Fair. There’s nothing unusual about that, right? Not really, except that the tickets didn’t go on sale until 10 a.m. on May 14!

That’s right, Linda spent 24 hours waiting to get her tickets because she just can’t get enough of the rockin’ face painters. She loves the music, but also the way they treat their fans.

"When they perform, you really feel like they seriously care about you as a fan, and that you're very, very important to them," she said.

Linda has seen the group eight times already, but expects this show to be their best - because their last one alway is.

"Every show they do, I'm so amazed. You can't think there's ever any way they're ever going to top themselves, and then every show you go to -- it's like, I can't believe it, they've outdone themselves again," she said.

Asked if she was planning to go home and get a nap after spending all night in line, Linda said that wasn't the plan as she has things to do. For one, she was planning to put her tickets in a safe deposit box until August 9.

That was a joke... I think.

Another Great Year at Country Music Expo

If you were one of the thousands of fans that came out for the hhgregg WFMS Country Music Expo last weekend, then you most likely left with a smile on your face. All of the performers seemed to build a repoire with the audience, and it's clear that they really enjoy being part of this very unique event.

What's so great about CME is that you not only get to hear some fantastic country music, but you get a chance to really get to know the artists beyond their music. Take, for example this insight on Jason Michael Carroll's new look with shorter hair.

The banter with the WFMS personalities is an added bonus, but it's still the music that drives this event. Everyone broke out their hits and Clay Walker even brought along his good friend Randy Bernard, recently named Indy Racing League president.

So thanks to WFMS and hhgregg for putting on another great show... and just in case you missed it, Rascal Flatts, Keith Urban and Sugarland are only three months away!

The Fairgrounds is Goin' Country Y'All

So, what do American Idol alums Danny Gokey and Bucky Covington, country stars Steel Magnolia and Coldwater Jane, and up-and-comer Blaine Larsen all have in common? These are just some of the country music stars WFMS will present at the 16th annual hhgregg Country Music Expo this Saturday and Sunday, May 1st and 2nd!

If you are a fan of country music, the Indiana State Fairgrounds is the place to be this weekend. You'll see acoustic concerts from big and new country stars! Bring a sharpie - you might even win the chance to MEET your favorite star and get their autograph and picture. So slip on those cowboy boots and practise your two-step - the stars are coming out and they're ready to play!

Horse Lovers Unite

Ok, even if you're not a self-proclaimed "horse lover", there is indeed something for everyone at this year's Hoosier Horse Fair Expo - spread out throughout the Fairgrounds today through Sunday, April 11. Just to give you an idea....where else can you find:

1.) A hippie on a horse - making jumps and galloping about in a "faux fro", glasses and tie-dye tee straight out of 'That 70s Show'

2.) A myriad of bejeweled and bedecked saddles

3.) Cute ponies and their even cuter riders

4.) Lots of cowboys sporting their cowboy hats

5.) Cowboy boots - ALL shapes, sizes, colors, you name it...I found these cute-as-button boots - perfect for my babies, but come with deep pockets. These were nearly $50 per pair.

6.) Fashionable headwear for horses? Who knew?!

7.) Hydropedes. What? I just wanted to throw this guy in the mix - he tried so hard to sell me on some comfort soles. Probably took pity on my 6 months pregnant belly and decided I was definitely in the market for padded soles. Didn't make the sell though...sorry Hydropede fella!

8.) The world's biggest rocking horse in the Kids Corral. Got kids? They'll love this.

9.) A huge assortment of horse coloring pages - also located in the Kid's Corral. Bring your young'uns and prepare to color till your heart's content.

10.) And, of course, lots of horse competitions: dressage, horsemanship ,showmanship, groom and clean - even a rodeo thrown in for fun.

Just Green It

Green, Green, Green. It’s a buzz word I know you’re hearing a lot right now. But, what does it really mean - to “be green?” Is it just a matter of recycling your paper and plastics? Perhaps it’s referring to composting your kitchen waste instead of tossing it in the trash? Or, maybe it’s taking a shorter shower to conserve a little water. Truly, it’s all of these things and so much more. You really can BE as green as you want. But, maybe you just need a little guidance - a push in the right “green” direction.

Well, mark your calendars, the first ever Greenfest Indy 2010 is heading to the Toyota Expo Hall from March 26th to the 28th.

According to Tina Jesson with Green Fest Expos, Inc., event organizer and promoter, “the expo’s purpose is to take green mainstream with the aim of informing, educating, and connecting businesses with consumers in our community.” Ultimately, the goal is to “be a little greener everyday.”

Promoters also hope the festival will create greater public awareness and easy access to resources available in Indianapolis and surrounding areas by hosting passionate individuals, green and eco-freindly businesses, and non-profit groups who are taking a small step in “being a little greener everyday. “

Many fun and family-friendly exhibits will be available along with educators, vendors with healthy food options, and community activities for kids and grown-ups alike.

Speakers include TV personality and Green Living Expert, Sara Snow. You may remember her from her early days as a Fox-59 morning news anchor? Now a best selling author of Sara Snow’s Fresh Living and host of the Discovery Channel’s “Get Fresh with Sara Snow”, Sara will share her enviable green living expertise with all attendees. Also speaking is Timothy Gray, an architect, educator and environmental advocate with extensive expertise in sustainable design.

Though this is the first of its kind in Indianapolis, promoters anticipate attendance will reach over 10,000 for the three day event. Expo sponsorships will be split into five Zone areas: Reduce It, Recycle It, Re-Use It, Re-new, Green Businesses & Jobs, Organic & Health. Flowers, Patios & Swag

Do you like to garden? No? Me either, but I do it anyway… and I do like the end result.

There’s something about having a well kept yard with flowers in bloom and fresh mulch connecting it all that makes the world seem right. Add a babbling brook and a fire pit with seating, and you’ve just created an outdoor paradise perfect for reading, entertaining or a nice summer siesta.

That’s what makes the Indiana Flower & Patio Show such a great event. Throughout the 4 ½ acre West Pavilion and the Toyota Expo Hall, you get to see a variety of outdoor paradises that will make you forget we’re still at the tail end of winter (with snow always a possibility).

This year’s show is themed “A Novel Idea” and boasts 29 sensational gardens inspired by each landscape artist’s favorite book, which range from The Bible to “Robin Hood.” I strolled through most of the gardens right before today’s show opening and they are absolutely incredible! Check ‘em out:

I know there has been some confusion about the other 3-day flower show that debuted in downtown Indy last weekend, but there is simply nothing that compares with this show. It is way better than any other show in the Midwest and compares favorably to just about any show in the country. It has 57,000 square feet of gardens, for Pete’s sake! It is also locally owned and operated, which always means something to me.

After 52 years here at the State Fairgrounds, this show has become a family tradition for many Hoosiers – a place to get excited about the upcoming seasonal change and a great resource to prepare for that outdoor project you’ve been putting off.

And there’s one other great thing about the Indiana Flower & Patio Show: FREE STUFF! Each day, the first 100 visitors that visit a show information booth and say “I love the Indiana Flower & Patio Show” will receive a free swag bag full of very cool items related to finer outdoor living. Another 100 bags will be distributed at random. How can you beat that?!

So make sure to visit the show sometime between now and March 21. And even if you don’t like to garden, you will love shaking off the winter blahs.

The Big Cheese CONTEST

On any ordinary day, when I’m pondering great works of art (I mean, don’t we all?), my mind wanders with thoughts of marble…clay…bronze…and cheese.

Wait. CHEESE?

Yep.

If you’re a fairgoer, you are probably very familiar with the gargantuan cheese sculptures made by the “cheese lady”, Sara Kaufman. Each year, the American Dairy Association of Indiana sponsors Sara to sculpt something out of 1300 pounds of cheese throughout the entirety of the fair. Take a look at past years’ projects to jog your memory.

This year, ADAI is holding a contest. They want YOUR help in deciding what the Cheese Lady should create at the fair!

So what do you think? Michaelangelo’s Statue of David in a nice light Swiss? A Pepper Jack version of Rodin’s The Thinker? Personally, if someone were to sculpt a likeness of me, I would like to think I’d be made of a good sharp Cheddar, perhaps with Mozzarella hair.

After your winning idea is on display for the 17 days of the fair, just be sure to bring lots of crackers. And a really big knife.

Lions and Tigers and CLOWNS

Oh my! To be precise – one lion, twelve tigers and countless clowns.

Yep, it can only mean one thing: the circus is in town. But not just any circus – the classic Murat Shrine Circus!! Only the fellas with the fezzes can put on this kind of show.

Way back when, I can remember Mom taking my brother and me to the circus and being absolutely transfixed on the wonder of it all – from the lights, to the music, to the animals and the limber acrobats. And then I had my first taste of cotton candy – I was hooked.

I now have the pleasure of being able to take my own kids to the Circus. Ah, the sheer joy of watching their little faces light up at the action is truly worth the price of admission. In fact, I really don’t know what I enjoy more – watching ‘Neecha and her Dazzling Dobermans’ or my son’s face grinning from ear to ear for literally the duration of the show.

Luckily, I will have the opportunity to do both! We snagged affordable tickets for the Sunday, 11:30 performance. But don't despair, there are many opportunities to visit. Indy a hockey town?

It’s March. For some, that means spring is right around the corner and it’s time to start thinking about outdoor activities. For others, it means “let the hoops madness begin.” But in the world of youth hockey, it means it’s time to get ready for end-of-the-year tournaments, trophies and celebrations.

DON’T CLICK TO A DIFFERENT PAGE JUST YET! I know that “roundball” is the sport of choice in Indiana, but you can’t deny that hockey is gaining a strong foothold – even in the Heartland.

TV ratings for the “Winter Classic,” the NHL’s annual outdoor New Year’s Day game, are strong here in the Circle City. And how about that Olympic Gold Medal Game – weren’t you on the edge of your seat? According to NBC, 29 percent of all Indianapolis residents watching TV were tuned in to Canada’s dramatic overtime win over Team USA… and that’s while Purdue was battling Michigan State for first place in the Big Ten on a different channel!

I believe that Indy does have a strong hockey culture and that youth hockey is really starting to thrive here. The Pepsi Coliseum Youth Hockey League presented by St. Vincent Health is doing everything possible to grow the sport for both boys and girls by offering:
· Free ice time and equipment for kids through its Friday Night Hat Trick program
· The cheapest league dues in town
· Payment plans for parents on a budget (and who isn’t?)
· Expert coaching through a partnership with the Indiana Ice

Although it’s too late to get kids involved this season, it’s something to think about next fall if your son or daughter likes to ice skate or just be around a great family activity. And who knows… maybe one day you could be in the stands rooting for your kid at the Olympics shouting “U-S-A, U-S-A.”

Indiana State Fair -- a Young Person's Perspective

Recently, my 11 year-old niece was given a school assignment to “create a brochure about something they know a lot about.” I was giddy to hear Laira had chosen the Indiana State Fair, excited to read how she saw the event and interested in what about it was important to her.

My sister emailed it to me: a tri-fold, six-panel, A+ marketing piece complete with clip art and copy written entirely by a 5th grade student. Three panels consisted of the basics: address, phone number, website, dates, ticket price and the all-important testimonials from classmates singing the praises of our Indiana State Fair.

Inside are some of the most enticing marketing promos I’ve ever read:

“The Ride are very fun, we have a water ride, big slides, roller coasters, just about everything. Sometimes we have the Mummy that one makes my stomach go crazy. The Rides do cost money you can get tickets. So those are The Rides hope you enjoy!”

“There are 4-H animals and 4-H exhibits. If you get a sign at your own fair that says you’re going to the State Fair that means you have to make your exhibit again and take it to the State Fair and we will judge it there. Then your animals, you can choose to take them if you want. The first week of the fair is 4-H week.”

“The Indiana State Fair is a place that you can see some really famous people. The best part is the tickets are only up to $20 per person. (Note: Aunt Bobbi was not consulted regarding these ticket prices.) Not like other places where it is $100 for one person. Some people that have been here are Raven, Carrie Underwood, Demi Lovato, Rascal Flatts, Rodney Atkins, Corbin Bleu, Kelly Clarkson, and Jason Aldean. Lots of very famous people. You should come by and see who is coming in 2010. Check it out it’s really fun!”

“Now you are probably wondering what the main theme is of the fair. Well every year we have a Year of the… One year as the Year of the Corn, and once year was the Year of the Big Tree, and last year was the Year of Tomatoes. It’s really fun to go into the mane gift shop and see everything we have.” (Obviously, this piece was created prior to our 2010 featured agriculture product announcement. Once again, the Gift Shop will be decked out…this time highlighting the “Year of Pigs”.)

“The Petting Zoo is more for little kids. We some years have a circus, we had Acrobats come last year in 2009, and there are animals. We have had Dora the Explorer come visit, and we have an Alligator show every other year. It is a really good spot at the fair to take your younger kids too. Oh yeah and a big hit is the pony rides! A lot of the kids love the ponys.” (Those in the know will recognize this description of the Riley Fun Park.)

“The Pepsi Stadium is where the 4-H animals are shown. We have the Queen Contest in the Pepsi Stadium, and the horses are shown there as well. Sometimes people go in there just to sit and get cooled off. It is one of the biggest buildings at the fair. So it’s just a little idea of where and what the Pepsi Stadium is.” (Yea…she mentioned the Queen Pageant! Apologies to Pepsi-Cola and our sponsorship contract that states the building be referred to as the Pepsi Coliseum.)

If those don’t make you want to visit the Indiana State Fair, nothing will. There’s something for everyone: crazy rides, fun gift shop merchandise celebrating pigs, champion 4-H exhibits, a good spot for younger kids, and really famous people! What does the Indiana State Fair offer to you?

Babe. Winkelman.

Florida has Disney World. Virginia has Colonial Williamsburg. Minnesota has the Mall of America.

And Indiana has its very own attraction/amusement park for the next week. I’m not kidding. It's a playground for one and all. It’s the Indianapolis Boat, Sport & Travel Show. It’s been a long time since I was on a boat - the last time, I was sitting on deck drinking something with an umbrella in it - and I don’t consider myself as “sporty,” but if I were you, I’d travel over to the show at the fairgrounds. (See how clever I am, with using the words of the event in my blog? Oh, my sides!)

A few reasons why you should go:

**DockDogs. There are DockDogs shows, where local four-legged friends and their owners compete to be the top diver/jumper. If you go, you’ll get a sneak-peek, since the DockDogs will be featured this summer at the Indiana State Fair!

**Kids’ Day. On February 27th, get them out of the house and onto the Rock Wall. They’ll love you for it. They’re already squirrelly for Spring; why not humor them?

**Tackle Town. I am not making this up. There is an area called Tackle Town USA. Shouldn’t that be reason enough?

**Twiggy the Water Skiing Squirrel. This is exactly what it sounds like. Check out Twiggy’s schedule here.

**Babe Winkelman. As a little sister who had no choice but to watch whatever her big brother was watching on TV, I know who Babe Winkelman is. He’s a well-known outdoorsman, and has been hosting shows about hunting and fishing for years and years. But regardless of that fact, I’m okay with anything having to do with a man who has a name like Babe Winkelman. BABE WINKELMAN, people.

So what are you doing this week? Why not do something different, get out of the house, and get a taste of warmer weather at the Indianapolis Boat, Sport, & Travel Show. It’s here all week (until 9PM on weekdays), through the weekend. If you stop by, tell Babe and Twiggy I said hi. At the very least, have your picture taken next to the Tackle Town sign.

Olympic figure skating - An insider's guide

Have you been enjoying this year’s Olympic Games? Lord knows that all the snow around here sure keeps you in the “winter mood.” I always find it interesting how we Americans pay attention to sports like freestyle skiing and 2-man bobsled once every four years, but then after watching it for an hour on TV, we are suddenly experts, knowing exactly what each competitor did wrong or should have done differently.

When it comes to figure skating, there is one person around here who has the credentials to back up any criticisms. Sandy Lamb is a coach with the Winter Club of Indianapolis, which is based at the Pepsi Coliseum and was one of the first

clubs in the country to become an official US Figure Skating affiliate.

Sandy started skating at the Coliseum when she was 7 years old and has never stopped. She’s coached for 43 years and has guided many skaters to national prominence and one senior team to the Olympic and World teams. She was elected the first female president of the Professional Skaters Association (the largest organization of ice skating professionals in the world) and has a sister who was one of the best ice dancers in the world before it became an official Olympic event. I asked her a few questions about this year’s Olympics, and here is her take:

Q: What do you enjoy most about the Olympics?
A: Since I was a coach at the Olympics many years ago, I know what the athletes have in the Olympic Village. The cafeteria is "the place" where all of the different athletes meet to have their meals. It is a great time for the different sports to get together and ask how the day went (on the ski hill, the bobsled run, the skating rink, etc.). Great fun!

Q: What are your favorite Olympic memories?
A: I always enjoy seeing what the configuration of the torch is that will burn during the entire games as well as who is selected to light the torch.

Q: Who are some skaters we should be looking for in these games?
A: For the Americans, watch for Jeremy Abbott and Evan Lysacek (last year’s World Champion) in the men’s competition. In the dance event, Tanith Belbin and Ben Agosto AND Charlie White and Meryl Davis are strong – both teams should be in the top 3 or 4. The pair event was won at our Nationals by a fairly new team with little experience, so it is a guess as to how well they will skate and do on the International scene. The ladies do not have a "name" that people recognize yet. This hurts figure skating because we usually have a recognized “Queen of the Ice.” We need that at these Olympics so people will latch on to figure skating again.

Q: Is America’s future bright in figure skating?
A: As I said before, we need a "name" in the ladies event so people can watch her and feel as though they know the champions. Rachael Flatt, the 2010 U.S. Ladies Champion, is very athletic and performs fairly consistently; however, she lacks beauty and flow in her skating.

Sounds like my skating, but my only shot at Olympic glory is if they add channel changing as an official competition. Maybe someday.

(Wo)man's Best Friend

We are Dog People.

In light of the Indy Winter Classic Dog Show that is taking place at the Indiana State Fairgrounds this weekend (learn details here), I wanted to introduce you to the canine companions that bring adventure to the households of your “Blue Ribbon Blog”gers.

First up is Laci. She belongs to Bobbi Bates. Laci is a Miniature Schnauzer who is almost five…although you’d never guess it with her sweet little puppy face!

(Something tells me that Laci doesn’t sleep under the covers like that, but it’s too cute for me to wonder about it too much.)

Next up is seven-month-old Lola, who belongs to Angie Foreman. Lola, according to Angie, is “pure mutt” with a dash of Border Collie. And from these pictures with Angie’s kids, it looks like she’s pure fun too.

Last, but certainly not least, is my Sophie. She’s a Corgi/Beagle mix (a “Corgle,” I’m told) who is five years old. That breed combination makes for very short legs, a hound-dog sniffer, and a quirky personality.

From the second picture, can you figure out why I call her Yoda sometimes?

Our fourth blogger, Andy Klotz, does not have a dog. That’s okay though; he can always borrow one of ours if ever he feels the need for a good snuggle or a romp in the yard.
Are you a dog person? Come celebrate our canine companions at the Indy Winter Classic Dog Show at the fairgrounds, all day Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Just bring a lint roller.

Jump, Dog, Jump

Everyone loves dogs, or so it seems. During the State Fair, we draw incredible crowds for the dog shows and other dog-related events, and the same will be true this weekend during the Indy Winter Classic Dog Show.

The Indy Winter Classic has more than 2,000 dogs from around the country competing in dozens of categories. Ultimately, there will be 7 different group champions crowned and one of those will be selected as Best of Show. So that got me – a non-dog owner – wondering what makes one dog that much better than another.

Some people like big, hairy dogs; other folks like small, short-haired dogs, and that’s understandable. But if you are standing there looking at 20 different Golden Retrievers, how do you decide that one is so much “better” than the others?

Roger Hartinger can tell you. He has been all over the world judging dogs of all different breeds for the past 35 years. He seems to like the Indianapolis show, which is run by the Hoosier Kennel Club, and especially likes the renovations done to the West Pavilion over the years.

He said that many things figure into a dog's final score other than appearance. He knows each breed's history and what they were originally bred to do. For instance, an Alaskan Malamute has to look like it can pull a sled, so it needs to have a certain look and movement... interesting.

So the next time you think your Beagle is a champion -remember, he may look great, but that's not all that matters. When it comes to show dogs, there’s more than meets the eye.

Going Green and Blah Blah Blah

“It’s not easy being green.” You got that right Kermie.

In today’s world, there’s an abundant supply of “going green” tips, opinions, and unsolicited advice from sustainability do-gooders. It seems everywhere you turn these days, you’re hit with something about “greening your ______” (take your pick: life, planet, office, home, and on and on…).

Now, this is all fine and good. But, you have to weed out what will work for you and what just doesn’t make sense. After all, some people might have the wherewithal to install solar panels to their roof and a wind turbine in their backyard. Others, well, it’s all you can do to take out your weekly supply of recyclables to the curb for pick-up. I personally fall somewhere closer to the curbside recycler.

But, I’m happy to report that my employer, the Great Indiana State Fairgrounds is falling closer to the “wind turbine” caliber of sustainability. Yes, we did indeed install a wind turbine last spring, which generates 5 kilowatts of electricity an hour! We also created a rain garden, installed a greenhouse, solar shelters, and planted enough tomatoes to feed a small army for the 2009 Indiana State Fair. In fact, we have been awarded and recognized nationally at the IAFE (International Association of Fairs and Expos) for our greening efforts. We were even nominated for an Indianapolis Sustainability Award!

All this green “do-goodery” at work does make me think about ways I can improve my sustainability actions at home. Hmmm, perhaps I’ll get around to installing a compost bin this spring – and just maybe my vegetable garden will thank me with big, juicy sun-ripened tomatoes. I think Kermit would even agree – being green may not be easy, but it can be very tasty.

A Rose by Any Other Name...

…would smell as sweet, or would it just smell? Each year, approximately 150 artists submit promotional packets for consideration to perform at the Indiana State Fair, and a good number of them are dedicated to performing someone else’s music. That’s cool…I like cover bands, and familiar tunes draw visitors to the stage. The Good smell sweet. The Bad, not so much…but hopefully, I’m smart enough to not pick those flowers.

Another sect of entertainers takes it to the next level. Not only do they cover others’ music, they limit their performance to the music of one particular group…the music of what one may surmise is their favorite band…or what they hope is someone’s favorite band. A band so popular, beloved and amazing, the audience won’t care they aren’t hearing the original, provided the impersonators are an authentic recreation in sight and sound.

Member of this faction, my friends, are the Tribute Bands.

Typically, the artists being saluted have…um…moved beyond their days of glory, though their flame still burns brightly. KISS, ABBA, Elvis, The Beatles (of course)…they’re all out there, some based here in Indiana. Recently an Alan Jackson imitator crossed my desk, which was kind of odd, since Mr. Jackson is still recording great music and not one I’d consider requiring a tribute just yet.

I’ve booked several tribute bands over the years. You like Poison? Their praises have been sung (or screamed) at the Fair. How about Jerry Lee Lewis? Audiences showed their admiration at “his” shows the past two years. Johnny Cash more your speed? I’ve hired his vocal likeness as well. And lest we forget the Elvis Impersonator Contest, which has become a staple of Indiana State Fair programming, consistently drawing huge crowds and growing each year.

I’ve often kicked around the idea of holding a Tribute Band Day on the Main Street Stage but never done it. This year, the idea has been floated around to host such an event in the Hoosier Lottery Grandstand. How fun would that be???

The More Things Change...

Confession: Until I worked at the Indiana State Fair, I could count on one hand the number of times I had visited the ISF. It wasn’t my fault, though; I lived in Perry County, a solid three-hours away, and the Wilcher mini-van only made treks up to Indianapolis a couple times a year to stay with my grandmother. Grandma’s house was (and still is) without air conditioning, so you can see how a trip to Indy in mid-August might be too much of a sweltering task.

However, I do have my share of State Fair memories. Take a trip down that lane with me, won’t you? The first visit is represented below.

1985. That’s my brother Eric on the left and me on the right, at age 6. We’re showing off our souvenirs from the State Fair in front of Grandma’s lemon-yellow house. I specifically remember picking out the inflatable sword in hopes that Eric would think it was neat, not because I really wanted it. I’m pretty sure it didn’t work--maybe because the koala t-shirt made me decidedly less cool.

The next trip to the State Fair (that we have record of, anyway) was a cause for much celebration: Eric’s endeavors in 4-H (our club was called the Shamrock Bums—no joke) earned his Foods II entry a trip to the fair! (Eric, forgive me, but I had to do this.)

1990. Eric is 12, and stylish to boot. Apparently all the cool kids were wearing their watches on their forearms, and that forearm is gesturing to the best orange muffins in Perry County.

It wouldn’t be fair to show the above picture and not the others of that special day. No one in my family is safe from the blog. Not even my grandma.

Mom, Eric, Grandma, and me. I remember this moment. We’re sharing an elephant ear in front of the Home and Family Arts Building. Please pay special attention to how my socks match my t-shirt; I worked hard to look that good. I especially enjoy the logo on the right side of the bench—one that is still used today and is familiar to fairgoers.

Last but not least, the family portrait.

Dad decided to let us take his picture. Grandma is taking the photo. That’s her denim pocketbook (always a pocketbook, never a purse) on the right. I hate to think we made Grandma hop off the shuttle to snap the picture and then make a run for it to get back on, but I can only assume her lack of home air conditioning made it easy for her to be active in the out-of-doors when needed.

Now that I work at the Fair, I see families making memories like these every time they’re here. Except their photos are much better, thanks to digital cameras that will delete all the bad ones. So get your neon socks out and set your forearm watches: the Indiana State Fair will be here before you know it. August 6-22, 2010!

Home Sweet Home Show

So, the snow is gone. That should be a good thing, right? Not in my case. The pretty white blanket happened to hide a lot of landscaping flaws, such as my lopsided front garden flowerbed. The entire left side of the bed is so sad where the mums just didn’t quite thrive and I have no shrubs to fill the space. And, on the right side, one mum did thrive, but I neglectfully left it to die a slow death come late fall. Not to mention the fall leaves that have crowded around the rest of the area, wet and slick now with mud and decay. It’s my own fault really…I never clear out the remnants of my summer and fall flowerbeds at the end of season. Frankly, by fall, I’m over gardening and ready to hibernate for the season.

Which brings me to one particular problem…I noticed after the snow melted last week and we had maybe two days of 40-degree weather, my bulbs were budding! What?! I’ve never in my life experienced budding tulips and irises in January! Heck, it didn’t even get that warm. I’m heartsick that all my beautiful bulbs painstakingly planted last year are most likely never going to realize their full potential.

So, what do I do? Well, I’m heading to the Indianapolis Home Show on the 29^th for some much needed advice. Maybe I just didn’t bury the bulbs far enough into the ground? Not sure, but I aim to find out. I’m certain all those experts over at the Home Show can help me. And, you know, maybe while I’m there I can get some good landscaping ideas to fill-in that lopsided flowerbed of mine. Oh, and a referral for the exterior paint job I’ve been avoiding for 5 years. The faded paint has rendered our home’s wood trim a lovely shade of pink in contrast with our gray siding. It’s time.

2010: The Year of Pigs

First it was corn, then it was trees. Last year was tomatoes, and now, in 2010, the featured commodity at the Indiana State Fair is pigs. That’s right, the fair and Indiana Pork Producers are teaming up to celebrate this prominent part of Midwestern agriculture and staple of many Hoosiers’ daily breakfasts.

Of course, pork products aren’t just for breakfast. We also enjoy them at lunch in the form of a ham sandwich or a burger topped with a couple strips of bacon. And who doesn’t have a ham or pork chop dinner from time to time?

Yes, Indiana grown pigs are an important part of the American diet, and that’s why they will be featured at this year’s State Fair.

Deciding which item to spotlight is not very scientific. The fair and the State Department of Agriculture get together to discuss what commodities play a significant role in the state’s economy and which one consumers should learn more about. Since the pork industry contributes $3 billion to the Hoosier economy and employs more than 15,000 people directly, it makes sense to tell everyone that those sausage patties next to your scrambled eggs are not only great tasting, but also a key part of keeping a Hoosier farmer in business.

So the next time you bite into that BLT or salivate over that slice of pepperoni pizza, savor the flavor and the knowledge that you are contributing to one of Indiana’s best made products.

As one prominent pork industry spokesman would say… “Th… th… th…That’s all, folks.”

The Cool Kids

As a 4th grader who yearned to be cool, one of the best places to practice and flaunt such potential coolness was Rainbow Skateland, nestled in the boonies of Perry County. I remember lacing up those sweet beige-and-orange rentals, cuffing my stonewashed jeans with the zippers at the bottoms, and rolling smoothy to the Q-Bert game next to the lockers. I would order my nachos confidently from the snack bar, arms resting on the counter thanks to the two-inch lift those eight wheels provided. Soon enough, my favorite Whitney Houston hit would play (“I Wanna Dance with Somebody”) and I felt the need to get out onto the rink. Huddled with the timid masses at the threshold between the berber carpet and the slick polished rink, I rocked back and forth like I was trying to enter a double-dutch game, gauging just the right moment for entrance into the pack already rolling around the floor. Once into the fray, I would spend the next hour navigating turns, avoiding groups of fast fifth-graders, and trying my best not to slam into a wall.

Take away the fifth-graders, the Whitney Houston, and the Q-Bert, and you’ve got the sport of Roller Derby.

Our own Angie Foreman already blogged about Indy’s own Naptown Roller Girls a few entries earlier (just scroll down), so I won’t go into particulars about rules and regulations about roller derby. I will, however, introduce you to Strawberry Jam, one of the Naptown Roller Girls. Her cool factor is way up there. Here’s what she had to say about skating for glory at the Pepsi Coliseum.

*Describe roller derby in three words.

Tough. Powerful. Addicting.

*What is your favorite moment during a bout?

Putting the jammer on the ground…over and over and over.

*Any good injury stories?

Well, personally I’ve had two surgeries due to derby. First, I broke my ankle and had a plate and six screws put in. Fourteen months later, I had my knee worked on. The “best” injury goes to Scary Poppins: she was hit directly into a wall when we first started and broke her humerus completely. The x-ray is almost like a cartoon of what an x-ray looks like.

*How does it make you feel, being a part of NRG?

It’s a sisterhood. We sweat. Bleed. Strategize. Run the league. We do it all as one amazing group of talented women…with the help of a few men. It’s an amazing feeling to look in the faces of ladies who are going to battle together.

*Tell me about your fans. They seem integral part to the whole vibe of the game.

WE LOVE THEM! I can’t say enough amazing things. They love the sport as much as we do. They learn the rules and discuss the games with us. They support us 100%...we always say we are the luckiest team in the nation because we have the best fans!

*Any little-known tidbits that those unfamiliar with derby would find interesting?

Most people don’t realize that none of us get paid to play—in fact we all pay dues to be a part of the league. The girls on the track are the same girls who put the track together on bout day, the same girls that set up the ticket sales and deliver tickets to our vendors around town. We manage the league, run the league and skate for the league.
